MEDIA BACKGROUNDER
With an international reputation as a leading designer of furniture, accessories, wall art and sculptures, Martha Sturdy is known for her distinctive artwork that is sophisticated, minimal, and bold. Martha creates oversized statements using materials such as casting resin, leather, steel and brass. Martha's designs are ever changing and represent three decades of artistic evolution.
A graduate of Emily Carr University of Art + Design, Martha started her career designing jewelry. She quickly established a name for herself internationally when her designs graced the covers of fashion magazines worldwide. Martha achieved commercial success by selling to top name department stores out of New York. With this success came the opportunity to exercise her creative passion beyond wearable art.
In the early 1990s Martha presented an innovative new collection of resin tabletop and home accessory pieces. She started selling to a new industry and expanded her global clientele. Doors opened for international sales through trade shows in Paris, New York and London and Martha began to work with many of the world's top designers.
Success prompted Martha to push her designs further. Her home décor pieces evolved into larger creations for the home. Elements that were apparent in her earlier designs came to fruition in larger scale furniture items such as 12-foot brass dinning tables, giant 7-foot steel plates, resin floating tables and sculptural chairs. Martha became known for the massive scale and generous proportions of her work.
In 2000, Martha turned to her artistic roots in sculpture to create wall sculptures, standing steel sculptures, and 3D sculptures, all of which incorporate her love for the oversized and dramatic. Martha's sculptures make a bold statement - a statement that has won the appreciation of designers, artists and collectors alike.
Martha Sturdy's name is found among the design elite and her creations are shown alongside some of the world's most exclusive brands. Her works are sold in Hong Kong, London, New York, Taiwan and The Netherlands, and can be found in the finest stores around the globe, including Baker Furniture, B & B Italia, Donna Karan Home, Lane Crawford and Neiman Marcus.
Each piece of Martha's artwork is handcrafted at her studio in Vancouver, Canada where she also has a gallery showcase.
In 2005, Martha Sturdy was inducted into the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts (RCA), one of Canada's most enduring cultural institutions composed of over 500 established professionals working across Canada in 20 visual arts disciplines. In 2001, Martha was named one of the top 20 designer/artists to watch for in the next decade by Metropolitan Home magazine.
