Martha’s latest sculptural works will debut this week in Japan. “Reflections” will be showcased in three distinguished exhibitions: Tokyo Design Week, Bamboo Expo and at the Orie Art Gallery.

The “Reflections” series was inspired by the forest that surrounds Martha’s home in Pemberton, BC, Canada. Here she finds beauty and peace in all elements of the environment.

The salvaged cedar used for the series was hand selected by Martha, split, charred and sanded to create the velvet like texture of the finished collection.

“Through ‘Reflections’ I want to deliver an experience: to draw you in to interact with the sculptures, to see their undulating shape and feel their satin texture,” says Martha. “To sense the strength and beauty of the environment that inspired their creation.”

Internationally renowned artist and designer, Martha Sturdy, accepted an invitation to present at Vancouver’s Pecha Kucha event held on Thursday, April 8th. Pecha Kucha brings together Vancouver’s culturally minded to enjoy an hour and a half of inspiration, viewpoints and ideas on creativity, culture and design by our City’s own cultural makers.

At the event, Martha surprised and wowed the audience with a glimpse into her personal inspirations and passions that have yielded her celebrated artwork and designs by introducing a NEW LANDSCULPTURE PROJECT that she is working on at her Farm in Pemberton.

Having primarily worked with materials such as Resin, Steel and Brass, she is taking a departure and is sculpting with dirt and logs. By building a cross country course for her horses she is working with tools that include her tractor, brush cutter, chainsaw, and her most recent toy that she bought herself (to celebrate her 67th birthday!) – her wood chipper. Using her tractor, she has been clearing a path through the woods, chipping up all the brush and branches that had fallen over time. The wood area is quite marshy in some seasons so chipping all the branches assists with stabilizing the land and makes dirt. She is also pulling out posts that existed on the land to make horse jumps on the course as well as digging a water challenge in the course for her to canter through with her horses. With the 30-40 truckloads of dirt that she excavated from the water challenge she is sculpting hills and valleys that are supported by cedar logs.

To Martha, she finds beauty in all elements of her surrounding environment, from the scale of the grand cedar trees that are over 200 years old in the woods to the delicate moss and fern overgrowth. The farm and her horses provide a balance from her work in the City and provide a respite from which she can reflect and create artwork.
